Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is best described as painting with light. When viewing an actual painting, people will see it at differently. In the same sense, landscape lighting is also subjective. What is pleasing to one might be distasteful to another. Just remember, the canvas is black until you paint it with light. Let your imagination and creativity run wild! An impressive commercial center or private residence that is admired by day can be transformed into a multidimensional showplace at night. Illuminated waterfalls, ponds, terraced gardens and dramatic trees—you can create an evening wonderland of beauty.

Before you can begin to design your landscape lighting system, there are several questions you need to answer:

  • What are your primary requirements? Safety or security lighting, or esthetic enhancement of your landscape for extended hours of enjoyment?
  • What objects do you want to light? Be conservative here. Your eyes can only see one object at a time so over lighting or selecting too many objects will destroy the contrast that you're trying to create.
  • What type of effect to you want? Dramatic, or subtle?
  • What are your viewing angles and which one is most important?
  • Where is the 120 volt power located and is it adequate to supply your needs?
  • How to you want to turn your lighting on and off? By time only, by prevailing light, by some external signal, or some combination of one these?

By answering these questions you have identified the direction for the selection of the components that will make up your system. See Example.
